How to Paint Laminate in Three Easy Steps!

Dixie Belle Cobalt Desk.jpg

I finished up this desk yesterday and it was delivered safe and sound! This is (honestly) my least favorite of any paint projects to do, but it is necessary in some cases when you want to keep your IKEA or laminate furniture but just want to change it up. In this case, it was a standard, white slick finished desk. I made a YouTube video on how easy peasy the steps are. While I admit that the steps are easy, they are at the same time very tedious and leave no room for any artistic touch!

First, clean the piece by wiping it down and getting off any dirt/grime.

Step 1: Apply a coat of Dixie Belle Slick Stick. I apply mine outside as it is a bit smelly. Let it dry and if you want, you can apply another coat. I find that one coat suffices.

Step 2: Apply the chalk mineral paint. This time it was in the color, Cobalt. Since it was a deep color over stark white, it took coats and then again some touch ups in areas.

Step 3: Apply the Clear Coat. I apply mine with a synthetic brush, using long even strokes. I also add a drop of the paint color into the sealer and mix it in before applying. This helps to prevent any streaking.

Ok, so in my video I included a Step 4 but that doesn’t count as it was only to buy new drawer pulls!

In case you missed it, I also used Slick Stick on my painted kitchen countertops. It is a great product and my countertops have so far held up really well.

And, here is another video where I painted my laminate flooring in my bathroom (this was using Annie Sloan products).

Have a great week and on Thursday, I will share how to apply the clear coat so it doesn’t streak!
